Because I was out fighting cancer, I was not able to watch the TUF finale live. I have finally caught up with the TUF matches and news - I will have observations on the Diego/Luigi and Grove/Tanner fights tomorrow.
First off, the Credeur/Yarborough fight was scratched just minutes before it was set to begin. Credeur’s preliminary drug test showed Adderall, a drug usually associated with hyperactive children. It can increase the likelihood of cardiac issues, according to Keith Kizer, of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
With the Riddle/Dante fight, I don’t know if Riddle was that good, or Rivera was that good. That being said, if Dana White was giving out a most improved award, Riddle would win it, hands down. He has gone from an raw fighter to an up and coming star. He seems hungry to train and learn MMA, and that will serve him well.
The only thing different between the two Amir/C.B. fights was when C.B. submitted. C.B. will have a bright future in the UFC. Working with Arizona Combat Sports, his jiu-jitsu will improve, and he will be a more well-rounded fighter. What can be said about Amir, except, how fun is he? A funny self-deprecating, well-rounded fighter who can take serious punishment is a huge asset to the UFC. I can’t wait to see what he does next.

Cubs lost, and Carlos Zambrano has shoulder discomfort. Not good. Of course, we’re in for the most shocking TUF EVA! tonight, so that’s a good thing. Also good is that the blister I sustained from walking the strip in Vegas is finally healing. Onto the show:

Sorry for the late start tonight. I was at my niece’s high school graduation, and listening to speeches about sisterhood or something. To get that mess out of my system, I need to watch some guys pummel each other. Onto the show!

Across message boards, and in comments on MMA sites, I’m reading the same complaint - the fighters are too amateurish. Did I say complaint? I meant whine. Whyyyyyyyy are these weekly fights that I’m getting for the cost of basic cable not as good as the ones I see on pay-per-view?
This season’s fights, save the preliminary “are you a pussy or a poseur” fights, have been the best TUF fights I’ve seen in years. How quickly we forget J-Roc backing up around the ring with eyes the size of saucers, or Crazy Barrera standing over Ben Saunders for an entire round. The Riddle/Credeur fight was epic, and sets the stage for a fantastic rematch when the two have an actual UFC career. Who didn’t enjoy Matt Brown’s perfect kick to Jeremy May’s face, besides Jeremy May?
Are these fights technically perfect? Heavens, no. Gerald “Hotness” Harris didn’t seem to know what to do after slamming Amir Sadollah, and Sadollah missed out on a few submission opportunities. The only thing pretty in Dan Cramer’s win over Luke Zachrich was his pretty, pretty face. But these guys aren’t supposed to be perfect.
The Ultimate Fighter is a training ground for up and coming martial artists. If they were already perfect fighters, they would already be in the UFC, winning championships. They are on this show, training twice a day to become better fighters, and to get ready for the Octagon. Yes, it is a television show, and it is supposed to be entertaining. But there would be no reason to have these guys train with some of the best in the business if the idea wasn’t to make them into better fighters. Ease up, will you?

So, Boston Legal has moved to this time slot, which means I am now recording two shows at once, so I can’t periodically check in on the Cubs. This is annoying. Oh well. I have two fights to look forward to this evening, so let’s get on with it:

Gerald Harris - member of Team Rampage on the Ultimate Fighter, comedian, history teacher - answered a few questions for Chicks Heart Fights. Find out what it was like to live in a house with 15 guys, what Harris did to hecklers, and what he thinks of the nickname “the Hotness,” after the jump.
