Chicks Heart Fights

I usually get to write about happy things, like Chris Lytle’s head leaking blood like a sieve, or the precious Jake Dietchler. I have written about Adam Frey in the past, with good news, that his cancer is gone.

Today, the news is not as good. A small piece of Adam’s cancer is back, and the doctors fear that the cancer is chemo-resistant. He is trying to get into an experimental program at Sloan-Kettering. Apparently, the chemo actually kills some people, but Adam is expected to survive because he is young and (besides the cancer) healthy. Nonetheless, the treatment sounds like hell, and he is going to need all of our support.

Of course, Adam’s attitude is nothing short of remarkable. He has vowed to beat the cancer, again:

I would not be a man of my word if I let this beat me. In fact, if I helped and did all of those great things that you all say, I would be doing an injustice to you all for losing this. You have given me so much support. It would be wrong on my part to pack it in.

I find it incredible that he is focused on living so that he keeps a promise to us. If you haven’t bought an Adam Frey shirt , or made a donation, please do so now. Trips to NYC for treatment at Sloan-Kettering will add up quickly, so Adam and his family could really use our help. Stop by his blog, too, and give him some kind words. He and his family could use it.

Leftovers from UFC 84: Michael David Smith enlightens us on the sights and sounds of a UFC event from Octagon-side. Also, Ben Goldstein from Cage Potato is not going to die from drinking ipecac. Good to hear that you’ll keep living, Ben!

If the Chaos That is UFC 85 wasn’t enough for you, UFC 87 has had a few changes, too. Mark Coleman is injured, so he will not be fighting Brock Lesnar; Heath Herring will be. Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch has been added as the main card, and Clay Guida will fight Mac Danzig. Add that to a card that already has Florian-Huerta, and Dan Evenson vs. Cheick Kongo-this gal is getting dizzy just thinking about it.

This weekend is MMA’s debut on network primetime: EliteXC on CBS. I plan to write more later this week, and liveblog the event, but I wanted to share this in the meantime. Kimbo Slice was hoping to advertise for Reality Kings on his shorts. Reality Kings brings us such wonderful sites as Milf Hunter, Round and Brown and We Live Together. (Sorry, not linking to them.) CBS said no dice, and it was the completely right move by CBS. Though advertising for the parent company might not break FCC standards, it’s still not the best idea to have MMA linked to pornography in its first time available to the masses for free.

Finally, if you haven’t stopped by Adam Frey’s blog recently, check it out and give Adam some words of encouragement. Despite good news about the size of his tumor, the daily grind of chemotherapy is starting to wear on him, and some d-bags think that it’s a good idea to leave messages saying that he is going to die. Not cool. Let Adam know that you’re cheering for him.

It’s 6:40, and my couch is so comfy. Alas. I do have to go to work, but before I head in, I wanted to share some links with you.

• Jason Bryant of Intermat has moved his blog to a free site. Check it out for daily musings on the wrestling world.
• U.S. Senior Nationals are this weekend in Vegas, and they will have a bearing on the Olympic Trials. The Mat provides a preview of freestyle.
• Sadly, my man Mike Zadick did not qualify the US for the Olympics at 60 kg. He has one more chance on the first weekend of May.
• Chuck Liddell has been forced to drop out of UFC 85 due to a hamstring injury. Dana White is going to have to do some fast wheeling and dealing, because without Liddell-Evans, that card is pretty weak.
• Kalib Starnes was cut from the UFC yesterday. This is hardly a surprise, considering Starnes’ embarrassing performance at UFC 83 this weekend. In a sport where almost anything goes, the one thing that does not go is ducking a fight. I doubt any other large fighting organization will sign him. It will be interesting to see where he lands.
• Dana White says that Serra-Hughes is still a possibility.
• Finally, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has an excellent profile of the Cornell wrestler who is fighting cancer, Adam Frey.

PS-For some reason, I changed the name of one of the Fertitta brothers tonight from Frank to Thomas. I don’t know where that came from.

Adam Frey, Cornell’s 141, was in a car accident this week. Though his injuries from the accident were minor, a CAT scan showed tumors on his lung, kidney and liver. Today, he will have biopsies and find out more information.

UPDATE: The initial diagnosis is Hodgkin’s disease, the same sort of cancer that Mario Lemieux beat. He is now on his way back home to Pittsburgh to begin six months of chemotherapy.
