UFC 84: Predictions and Blog Party
I still want the job of the guy who comes up with the names for the UFC events, but I don’t think I could have come up with a better name for this event, “Ill Will.” The fighters going into the Octagon this Saturday have massive chips on their shoulders. Sean Sherk is mad at the California State Athletic Commission, Tito Ortiz is mad at Dana White, BJ Penn is mad at the world, and Keith Jardine is mad at the person who gave him the nickname “the Dean of Mean.”
After the jump, my predictions and a few stories from around Blogfrica.
- MMA Junkie has a humble, timid interview with BJ Penn .
- Cage Potato has two video interviews with Keith Jardine and Wanderlei Silva .
- MMA Rated has a fantastic interview with BJ where he is not scary at all, especially since he is talking about licking the blood of his opponent off his glove .
- MMA Weekly says that Sean Sherk is thinking about suing the CSAC .
- Five Ounces of Pain asks if the UFC is the right place for Tito Ortiz , and if this is do or die time for Wanderlei Silva .
- Yahoo Sports has a profile of Lyoto Machida .
- Finally, Fanhouse has Dana White calling Tito Ortiz one of the dumbest human beings that he has ever met .
As for my picks:
Champ B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (for lightweight title)
I’ve been looking forward to this fight for a while, mainly because I’m really wondering if the MGM Grand can fit the egos of both of these men in one room. Some fans may have to leave to make room. If they can both get over themselves long enough to actually fight, I pick BJ Penn by decision.
Keith Jardine vs. Wanderlei Silva
Both fighters have gone from overrated to what the heck happened to them status, and quite frankly, this is a must win for both fighters. I pick Silva by second round submission.
Lyoto Machida vs. Tito Ortiz
I am so excited that we will actually get to see Tito fight, instead of getting fired from the Apprentice, or serving as arm candy for Jenna Jameson. Of course, I don’t think Tito is going to win, but I’m still happy that he will actually be out of a suit. Machida by TKO in the second.
- Wilson Gouveia vs. Goran Reljic
- Thiago Silva vs. Antonio Mendes
- Rousimar Palhares vs. Ivan Salaverry
- Kazuhiro Nakamura vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
- Rich Clementi vs. Terry Etim
- John Koppenhaver vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
- Dong-Hyun Kim vs. Jason Tan
- Shane Carwin vs. Christian Wellisch
On Thursday, I will have a round-up of predictions from around the web.
