… from some sweet seats that a friend of a friend hooked me up with! I walked in the door, and a man handed me a ticket for free, and then my friend and I saw an old friend of his, that friend had seats in the center reserved section, about ten rows up. I’m a lucky gal! My lucky thoughts on the Midlands finals, after the jump… Continue Reading »

I will have more on Midlands tomorrow, but before I get some shuteye, I will just say:

You should be a happy boy, Mark. Your Hawkeyes look damn good.

Wow. I am in a good mood. Good fights, good friends, good beer. Tonight, we saw the vindication of a legend, the validation of the “next big thing,” and a CVS bag. More, after the jump:

… and I’m pretty darn excited about this line-up.
Matt Hughes vs. Georges St. Pierre
Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva
Lyoto Machida vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou
Rich Clementi vs. Melvin Guillard
Eddie Sanchez vs. Soa Palalei
YAY! Sure, these aren’t the fights we were expecting, and Silva vs. Liddell is about a year too late. Nonetheless, this promises to be a great night of fighting. My thoughts, and what writers around the web are saying, after the jump. Continue Reading »

When coaching at UNC-Greensboro, I’m not sure if Tom Shifflet had a vision of turning the Southern Scuffle into a great tournament that serves as an alternative to Midlands, or if he just didn’t feel like traveling during the holidays. Regardless of his motives, the Southern Scuffle has grown into an event that attracts some of the country’s best teams. In contrast to Midlands, it offers nicer weather and easier travel for East Coast teams, but of course, it’s not in the best city ever.
This year, Shifflet, now coaching at Hofstra, will return with seven seeded wrestlers, including three wrestlers with a #1 seed. Continue Reading »

Merry Christmas, Happy Winter Solstice, Happy Festivus and Happy Kwanzaa to all my readers who celebrate each holiday, respectively. I have been busy baking, wrapping gifts, and hanging out with my family (seriously, there is nothing better than seeing my 5-year old nephew’s eyes light up on Christmas morning), so I haven’t been posting much. Sorry.
In the next few days, that will, of course change. We are coming upon one of the busiest weekends in the wrestling and MMA world. Midlands, the Southern Scuffle, and UFC 79 will all take place in coming days. Most importantly, I will be volunteering at a high school freshman tournament.
I have already previewed Midlands, and I pinkie promise that I will also write on UFC 79 and the Southern Scuffle tomorrow night, as I am recovering from the high school tournament.

MMA Junkie reports that Matt Lindland and Dana White talked about Lindland’s possible return to the Octagon. Huzzah! I’d love to see Lindland fighting again, and he’d make a fantastic TUF coach.
A great story about Arizona St.’s Anthony Robles, their 125 lb. freshman who is ranked 19th by Intermat, and happens to have only one leg. Huzzah!
Couture plans on waiting out his contract with the UFC so that he can fight Fedor. Randy is not getting any younger, and I wonder if a 44-year old can wait it out. Granted, Randy isn’t just any 44-year old, but still, the clock’s a-ticking. Harrumph.
Everyone seems to be talking about Mike Tamillow’s blog, and for good reason. The 197lber from Northwestern writes a blog that is insightful, well-written, and hysterical. Huzzah!

Some of wrestling’s best will gather just north of Chicago on December 29 and 30 for the 45th Annual Midlands Tournament. I’ve been watching Midlands, whether on TV or live from the stands, since I was a little girl. I still remember seeing Joe Williams, a wrestler I had watched dominate in high school, dominate Midlands. Though the tournament has lost some of its luster, it’s still an exciting tournament held in my hometown. Pre-seeds were released, and after the jump are some of the matches I’m most looking forward to: Continue Reading »

Tonight, while watching CNBC’s profile of the UFC, I remembered the first time I saw the UFC. My high school wrestling coach had invited the wrestlers and managers to his house for an end-of-the-year party. This was the mid-90’s, and this was the old UFC - the UFC of the sumo wrestlers vs. boxers vs. muay thai fighters, and the UFC of broken limbs, eye gouges, groin kicks. Despite having watched years of wrestling, I was repulsed. I couldn’t handle the brutality. As you can see, my view is changed with the new UFC; the one that focuses more on combat then on violence.
While watching clips of the old UFC, and then the new UFC. In addition to the differences in fighting styles, I noticed one other difference: Continue Reading »

In case you haven’t noticed, I have a little bit of free time tonight, so I’m churning out the posts, and catching up on my two favorite sports. I wanted to let my wonderful readers know about some upcoming TV you might want to catch:
- On Saturday at 8 central, Spike is showing an encore of the Ultimate Fighter Finale.
- On Thursday at 9 central, CNBC is showing the documentary: “The Ultimate Fighting Championship: From Blood Sport to Big Time.”
