Battle of Mat Face: The Ultimate Fighter, Episode 7

Isn’t this episode 7? Maybe I can’t count. Anyway, Happy Halloween. Last night, when my nephew wanted to change his costume (for the second time) my sister said no. He replied: “You’re ruining Halloween for EVERYONE!” If you had a bad Halloween, you can apparently blame my sister. Onto the show:

Wrestlers to watch this NCAA season: In-State Tuition edition

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I live in Chicago. I was born and raised here, learned to be a Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan as a small child (I can still sing the Super Bowl Shuffle) and am proud to be from the same state as this guy. The one little piece of Prairie State love that I never picked up, however, was the love of the Fighting Illini. Never liked them, never considered the school when I was picking a college, and never, ever, EVER cheered them on, in any sport. This still continues, especially now, since I’m a Tiger. However, I can’t help but cheer for this young man… Continue Reading »

Jens Pulver: I Just Love the Man

Published by chitownchick under Jens Edit This

I have never been quiet about my affection for Jens Pulver. In addition to having a bit of a crush on him, I like his fighting style, and the way he coached his guys on TUF. This story by Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports just cemented my love for the man. His heart is as big as Soldier Field, he loves kids, and he has gorgeous eyes. Swoon!

He has a fight coming up on December 12 with Cub Swanson in World Extreme Cagefighting, and a book about his life, Never by Tim McKinnon, has recently been released.

Linky McLinkerson

- The Fighting Life asks why the UFC feels the need to manufacture rivalries between fighters. This seems a little more pro wrestling than UFC, and I’m not really a fan of the tactic. I enjoy some back story from time to time when watching a fight, but the main thing that I want to see is two guys who have trained really hard try to win by any (legal) means necessary.

- No Holds Barred has a podcast interview with one of my favorite US wrestlers, Mo Lawal. The sound quality isn’t the greatest, but Mo is always entertaining. Mo talks about his aspirations for MMA, his quest for Olympic Gold, etc. (Full disclosure, Mo is a friend of mine, and I will do back handsprings if he wins Olympic Gold.) In my opinion, Mo will easily make the transition into MMA due to his athletic wrestling style, and his previous experience with boxing. He will need to work hard on BJJ, but I don’t think he’ll have a problem with it.

- Steve Mocco and Damion Hahn both won the Medved in Belarus. Hahn defeated Lawal in the finals.

- Before I give you some links on Brock Lesnar signing with the UFC, I will give you my take. I first saw Brock Lesnar wrestle at an open tournament at Nebraska, and he is the most muscular man I have ever seen in person. I have spent my life around sports, and have been around countless wrestlers, football players, baseball players, basketball players (not that muscles ever really weigh them down), and Lesnar is the muscle head champion of them all. The thing that always surprised me about watching him wrestle for Minnesota is that his size never weighed him down, and he was a fast, agile heavyweight. I am very interested to see how powerful his punches are, and how he will handle being hit. Leland Rolling of UFC Daily believes that he Brock will make an immediate impact on the heavyweight division, and here is UFC Mania’s take. MMAScoops.com reports that Brock Lesnar’s first fight could be with Brad Imes. I don’t know if that’s the best fight to make Brock Lesnar a star. Imes matches up well with Lesnar’s size, and has some decent BJJ. I doubt that Imes would win because he couldn’t defend against Lesnar’s takedown, but I don’t think that this fight would be the dominating win that the UFC may want out of Lesnar in his first fight.

Too drunk to blog, but…

- Sylvia has love handles.

- It would have been better for the UFC if Vera won.

- Silva will enjoy the top spot for a while because no one is all that good at that weight class.

Good night.

If you get a chance, read this article from Mark Palmer of RevWrestling. It’s about the many changes in wrestling since it became an NCAA sanctioned sport. My favorite nugget, from Myron Roderick, the legendary Oklahoma State Coach:

The philosophy when I was wrestling that if you lifted weights, you’d be muscle-bound, couldn’t move.

I love it! When I read the world muscle-bound, Brock Lesnar immediately pops into my mind. He never seemed to have a hard time moving, but looking at him, I thought that he just might have trouble moving.

UFC 77 Predictions

Tomorrow night is UFC 77, and with all the Couture discussion this past week (and by the way, if you haven’t seen Dana White’s ESPN interview, WATCH IT. It’s the smartest I’ve ever seen Dana play an interview.) these fights has been relatively overlooked. Unfortunately, I will not be able to see tomorrow’s fight. Nonetheless, my picks of the top fights, and the picks of people who know better than me, after the jump.

Battle of Mat Face: The Ultimate Fighter, Episode 5

I work at an elementary school, and the eighth grade boys often don’t believe that I really like sports, so they are constantly testing my knowledge. “Who is Walter Payton?” “Who won the world series last year?” Finally, today, they thought that they could get me. “Who is the champion of the UFC?” It was fun seeing their faces when I answered “In which weight class?” Now, onto to the show:
